the Penguin, makes a play to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld
Synopsis
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka. From melting makeup to filming in freezing temperatures, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti discuss how they got into character during the production of “The Penguin.” Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of The Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022) but was unsuccessful. However, for his own series, the character is depicted as a casual tobacco user, with a preference for cigars. The DC Studios logo is set in a rainy alley in Gotham.
Absolutely spot on in tone and atmosphere
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Featured in Likes by Graham Norton: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Gritty, dirty, and dark, but Farrell is able to capture that spark of charm that Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano managed to.
Where to start with Farrell
There are similarities to the Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of dark stuff going on in this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that match the tone and don’t undermine it. Astonishing is the right word. I love seeing talented star actors get involved in roles like this, and the makeup/cgi or whatever exactly they did to physically transform him into the Penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell as an actor is completely immersed in this role
There’s always the risk that if the makeup job isn’t good enough or is a little off, it can be completely distracting. In the Penguin, it enhances his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s such good work. Maybe I’m a little biased because he’s one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will bring him some well-deserved praise. I never really tune into new shows right away because I like to watch them all at once, but I wanted to see how this one turned out.
